My artwork is my own interpretation of how I envision Holy People and Saints. Growing up in Central and Northern New Mexico I was surrounded by images of Holy People and Saints either in your own home or at your relatives, especially if you were Catholic. I was also educated with 13 years of parochial school.
I began painting in this style because of the encouragement of a close friend, William Hart McNichols a seasoned Iconographer himself. He offered to mentor me, but I felt I couldn't follow such a rigid style of an actual Icon or the Retablo style of a Santero. I wanted to create an image in the way that showed a different interpretation of the Saints and love for them.
Before I begin a painting, I research my subject and many times discover some image, story or vision about the Saint or Holy Person, which I try to include in each piece. I get my images and ideas from a multitude of sources, print ads, magazines, family, and friends. I always make sure that the image fits the Holy Person.
" I hope you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy creating it"
